Incentive Travel in Ticino, Switzerland: why it works and how to build a tailor-made programme
More than a reward
An incentive trip differs from a business trip or a team-building activity for one specific reason: its purpose is not to achieve an operational result during the trip, but to recognise a result that has already been achieved, while strengthening the relationship between people and the company.
This changes the way the programme is designed: a more relaxed pace, less time dictated by an agenda and more room for meaningful experiences, with a carefully considered balance between shared moments and individual time
Why Ticino competes with more distant destinations
As the Ticino Convention Bureau points out, the canton offers one of the broadest selections of incentive activities in Switzerland, ranging from outdoor experiences to food and wine.
Alongside this variety are structural advantages that matter just as much as the scenery: proximity to international hubs such as Milan Malpensa Airport, making the region easily accessible without the logistical complexity of more distant destinations; the organisational reliability associated with Switzerland; and a Mediterranean identity, reflected in both the climate and lifestyle, that often surprises visitors expecting a more traditionally Alpine atmosphere.
It is the combination of these factors — rather than any single strength — that makes Ticino competitive even with more exotic destinations, often with considerably lower costs and organisational complexity.
A compact region with many different sides
What makes Ticino particularly well suited to an incentive programme is how close very different landscapes, atmospheres and experiences are to one another. Within just a few kilometres, you can move from mountains to historic villages, from nature and culture to food, wine and outdoor activities. This variety allows us to design each programme around the group, selecting and combining the experiences that best match their interests and the purpose of the trip.
In the south, our tour through the Mendrisiotto region takes guests across Monte Generoso — home to the Fiore di Pietra designed by Mario Botta — and Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its fossils. The journey then slows down in the Muggio Valley, among chestnut forests, historic mills and stone villages, before ending the day with tastings of local Merlot, cheeses and honey.
Further north, our Blenio Valley tour — in the so-called “Valley of the Sun” — leads guests through Romanesque churches, the ruins of Serravalle Castle and Alpine pastures where they can taste mountain cheese, honey and artisan chocolate, with the option of exploring the area on foot or by e-bike.
The Mendrisiotto Tour and the Blenio Valley Tour offer two different ways to experience the region, and both can become part of an incentive programme designed around the group. Depending on their interests and the purpose of the trip, we can combine nature, history, local flavours and outdoor activities to create a varied journey without long transfers. This is one of Ticino’s greatest strengths: the possibility of bringing together very different experiences while keeping the journey smooth, personal and deeply connected to the destination.
How we design a tailor-made programme
Every incentive programme we design begins with a brief that goes beyond dates and the number of participants: what achievement is being rewarded? What kind of company culture should the experience reinforce? What balance of energy — adrenaline, conviviality, culture and relaxation — best represents this particular group?
From there, we create a journey that alternates different experiences throughout the stay, always rooted in Ticino and its identity rather than simply imposed on the destination like a standard package. We manage the entire programme — logistics, venues, suppliers and content — so that the only responsibility left to the person organising the trip within the company is to enjoy the experience together with the team.
Who it is for
This approach is designed for HR Directors, People & Culture Managers and Talent Acquisition Leads responsible for recognition and retention programmes for sales networks, high-performing teams or strategic employee populations, particularly in industries where the level of care behind the journey needs to reflect the standards of the company itself: pharmaceuticals and biotech, finance and private banking, luxury and watchmaking, technology and commodity trading.
If you are also working towards other objectives — a shorter team-building experience, a private board retreat or a product event — our dedicated article on experiential team building explores a complementary approach based on the same principle: making the destination an active part of the experience, rather than simply its backdrop.
If you are considering Ticino for your company’s next incentive trip, the first step is a no-obligation conversation to understand your objectives, timing and the type of programme that would best suit your group.
